Explain In the self-designed portion of the major, IDS students choose 36 credits of coursework to create their IDS degree plan. In our current curriculum, we dictate that students must choose 15 of those 36 credits from a primary discipline and 12 of those 36 credits from a secondary discipline. We have found this structure to be too limiting for our students and a real barrier for timely graduation. In this revision, we have kept the 36 credit hour requirement, but we have removed the primary and secondary discipline structure within those 36 credits. In addition, we added the new course MATH 133 as an option in the Science Foundation section of the program.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Approximately 75% of students in the IDS degree program enter the major having completed 75 or more credits. Within the self-designed portion of the curriculum, our majors choose 36 credit hours of upper-level coursework to create their IDS degree plan. By dictating that 15 of those credits must be within a primary discipline and 12 of those credits be within a secondary discipline, there is less flexibility for our students to make the best use of the completed credit hours they bring with them into the major. Our goal with this revision is to open up the 36 credit hours of upper-level coursework in the self-designed portion of the major, so that students can make good use of the coursework they have already completed and graduate in a more timely fashion.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This should not have an impact on existing programs. It may change the mix of courses that an individual student uses to complete their IDS program, but that will vary significantly from student to student and the impact on any given program will be negligible.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

There are no financial costs associated with this change. In fact, this change may result in a small cost savings due to a more efficient advising process for faculty and professional advisors.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

This revision does not change the core IDS courses within the IDS major; those requirements remain the same. Nor does it change the number of upper-level credits required to complete the major within the self-designed portion of the curriculum. Students are currently choosing 36 credits of upper-level coursework from across a variety of disciplines here at CCU. With this revision, they will continue to choose 36 credits of upper-level coursework from the same variety of disicplines.
