Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Coastal Carolina has various mentor and tutor programs campus-wide. These programs have various requirements for student work. It is the LIFE Program’s goal with the introduction of a course designed for mentors and tutors to provide a framework for the entire campus contextualizing the practice of tutorial and mentor programs across the campus body. In this respect, the LIFE Program would like to enter into the campus community a course focused on promoting the College Reading and Learning Association’s (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) standards. Our hope is to introduce an eight-week, one-credit course for the campus community titled, “Introduction to Peer Tutoring”
There is a solid body of evidence regarding the efficacy of peer tutor training and the impact of training on the peer tutor and the students with whom they have a tutoring relationship. There are as many benefits for the peer tutor as there are for students who receive tutoring.  In the classroom, peer tutors enhance learning and social skills and there are meta-analyses that have shown the positive effects of peer coaching and tutoring on students’ motivation, self-concept, academic behavior, attitudes toward learning, and academic achievement.  In the university setting, peer students who use peer tutoring experience higher overall GPA, a higher likelihood to persist in college from fall to spring semester and a higher likelihood of graduating. Peer tutoring also has a significant, positive effect on performance, retention and graduation of students who are economically and educationally disadvantaged. Students who participated in tutoring sessions more frequently had better academic outcomes.
Students who participated in robust tutor training program reported improved subject matter knowledge, communication skills, leadership skills and significant development of value systems.  Students serving as peer tutors gain personal and professional skills, increased inter-cultural awareness and enhanced employability skills.  Calvin (2007) found that students serving as peer tutors gain experience and skill at navigating social dynamics, become more adept at impression management and overcoming interpersonal conflict to accomplish learning outcomes. Researchers have found that peer tutoring positively affected the cognitive strategies and social skills of tutors, greater confidence in communication and presentation and more effective resumes and job interviews (Sanford D. 2021)
The LIFE Program team reached out to campus partners who employ peer tutors to see if they would be interested in supporting a 1-credit hour peer tutoring course.  We received positive feedback from Greek Life, Student Athletics Tutoring, Dalton & Linda Floyd Peer Mentoring program, and the Student Success Center. This course includes an experiential learning through a 10 hour supervised internship.
