MCES 397 - Marine Coastal Environmental Science Senior Thesis Research Methods (1 to 4 credits) (This course is restricted to MCES majors) (Prereq: A grade of B or better in both lecture and lab for two of the four MSCI core courses: MSCI 301/MSCI 301L, MSCI 302/MSCI 302L, MSCI 304/MSCI 304L, MSCI 305/MSCI 305L; or permission of the instructor. A contract must be approved by the instructor and the department chair by the time of registration.) Students develop mastery of basic laboratory, field, and research methods required to conduct their Marine Coastal Environmental Science Senior Thesis projects under the guidance and supervision of a marine science faculty member. Students develop a thesis proposal for approval by the faculty research mentor during the course. No more than six total credit hours of 396, 397, 398, 399, 497, 498, and/or 499 may be used for major credit. F, S, Su.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

This course will be beneficial to Marine Coastal Environmental Science (MCES) majors. It provides a formal avenue to learn methods that will be applied towards a thesis project and/or set aside time to research and develop a thesis proposal under the guidance of a MSCI research mentor while receiving academic credit. MSCI faculty members are expected to engage undergraduate students in research as part of their normal function. This course provides a mechanism for this engagement. The course also provides a formal way for MSCI to document the number of students that are actively working on thesis projects with faculty members by semester and academic year. This course will be used by MCES Honors students as well as other students who wish to complete a synthetic research based thesis.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This course will have no impact on existing programs because it is restricted to MCES majors.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

This course will have a lab fee of $65 associated with it. This fee is commensurate with the AY 2021-2022 MSCI fee for 300-400 level courses. The fee will help offset expendable supply and/or field transportation costs associated with original research. Other project costs will be supported by individual faculty members, the Dept. of MSCI, and/or project-specific requests to the Honors College HTC Scholars funds.
