HIST 307 - European History (1848-1914) (3 credits) A study of the main currents of European thought, from the Revolutions of 1848 to the rise of industrial power, imperialism, diplomatic realignment, nationalism, and the road to World War I.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Justifications: (1) Modern European historians effectively frame the nineteenth century as the “long” nineteenth century. See Eric Hobsbawm’s Ages trilogy dating from 1789 to 1914. (2) Periodizing European history from 1848 to 1914 lobotomizes many important discussions around such topics as colonization and (early) decolonization, emergent ideologies, industrialization, and others. (3) I have routinely taught HIST 307, and it is impossible to begin with the Revolutions of 1848 without contextualizing the previous 18th- and 19th-century revolutions. In practice, therefore, I teach the long nineteenth century, even if asymmetrically. (4) As the History Department is running out of “open” course numbers, it behooves us to slightly repackage HIST 307 to allow us to still use it. It then becomes a neat course sequencing of HIST 306, The French Revolution; HIST 307, European History (1789-1914); and HIST 308, Interwar Europe. (5) The History Department reviewed and approved this revised course in Fall 2021.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This revised course is being added as an option for the minor requirements (Part II) of the European Studies minor and it remains an elective in Part III. In serving the minor, the long nineteenth century should be covered rather than the abbreviated time period.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

I am routinely teaching this course both in person and online on a rotating basis. It is already part of my regular workload.
