Explain We are restructuring our Chemistry Minor to allow for more course options within the minor. It is not simply one course change. The proposed changes are in the attached file.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

We are adjusting the Chemistry minor requirements to open the minor up to more outside majors who may have interest in other Chemistry areas. Right now students are required to go through a year of Organic Chemistry but not all students are interested in Organic. We are changing this to require a two course sequence in one of the 5 general areas of Chemistry (which Organic is still an option). They will then still need 7-8 credit hours in upper level Chemistry courses. The purpose is to allow an increase in Chemistry minors. As one example, in discussion with Marine Science, students may be interested in getting a Chemistry minor due to interest in Analytical techniques relevant to their major but Organic is not as relevant. So this would allow those students to have opportunities for a Chemistry minor. There may be other programs interested once we expand the opportunities beyond Organic.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

The changes would allow for more Chemistry minors and provide opportunities for other majors to have a more flexible experience for a Chemistry minor.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

There are none.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

We currently offer the required courses and often have seats available in those courses. It is expected to be just a slight shift in enrollments.
