EXSS 415 - Personal Fitness Leadership (3 credits) (Prereq: A grade of ‘C’ or better in EXSS 350/EXSS 350L and EXSS 385/EXSS 385L) Course builds on foundational content to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities related to prescribing exercise and demonstrating proper utilization of exercise equipment and techniques for enhancement of cardiovascular and musculoskeletal fitness. The course provides a focus on leadership and communication principles and administrative issues related to personal training and group fitness leadership.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Currently, there is a five-semester sequence for students to complete required courses in exercise science. The switch from EXSS 385/L (C or better) and EXSS-350/L to EXSS 350/L (C or better) as a prerequisite to EXSS 415 will condense this course sequence by one semester. After a review by multiple faculty members currently teaching these courses, it was determined that the student learning outcomes in EXSS 415 could be achieved with only a prerequisite of a C or better in EXSS 350/L.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This change will allow students to take EXSS 415 earlier and reduce the number of graduation delays due to the curriculum having a required five-course sequence.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None, just a change in prerequisite.

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

This request is to simply allow students to take this course earlier by modifying the prerequisites. The faculty and departmental resources that have supported this course previously will provide all needed support for the course with the requested modifications.
