SOC 430 Hate Crimes (3 credits) (Prereq: SOC 101 or SOC 102 and junior or senior standing or instructor consent) Hate Crimes is the study of bias-related crimes in the United States. The course provides an overview of the sociopolitical contexts of hate crimes, typologies of motivations, protected groups, and victim experiences. Students also gain an understanding of hate crime legislation and explore theories of hate as a sociological and criminological concept. F, S

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

With the Sociology Department's rapidly growing criminal justice major and minor and the criminology minor, more crime-related courses will help support the students' needs. This course has been taught for two semesters as a SOC 498 and has been taken by majors from criminal justice, sociology, intelligence and security, and philosophy. The Sociology faculty has been counting this course as meeting requirements for the social justice concentration and minor, as well as for the criminology concentration and minor, and the criminal justice major and minor.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

Positive only: A course with a crime-focused topic helps retain students interested in criminology, social justice, and/or criminal justice.
