CHIN 390 - Introduction to Chinese Literature and Film (3 credits) (Prereq: CHIN 210 or permission of the instructor) This course provides an introduction to influential literary and cinematic works from the Chinese-speaking world. Students learn about China and Chinese people’s everyday life by reading and watching their stories documented in textual and visual materials including classic Tang poetry, modern proses, and films about Chinese society. These materials allow students to examine crucial traditions and values that have shaped the cultural identities of the Chinese. The course also promotes students’ acquisition of intermediate Chinese reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills through engagement with selected materials. F, S, Su.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

CHIN390 is the first advanced-level Chinese course at CCU that focuses on Chinese literature and cinema. The course introduces students to important literary and cinematic works from the Chinese speaking world and helps them further improve their speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills in Mandarin. It is crucial for students studying Chinese to understand how Chinese values and cultural identities have been shaped and represented in major literary and visual texts.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

The Chinese program at CCU has grown fast over the past two years. There are currently 30 students majoring or minoring in LIS with Chinese as their primary language. Besides introductory and intermediate Chinese language courses, students need more advanced courses and electives to fulfill their major and minor requirements. Also, this course serves as an elective for the Chinese minor that I am proposing.
