FILM 486. Studies in World Film. (3) Course gives students the opportunity to study masterpieces of world film and to explore how these works are connected to broader cultural, social and historical processes. In this context, the course also studies key elements of film theory and film semiotics. Offered as needed.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Studies in World Film offers our students principles of film studies and film semiotics in the context of a global perspective. As such it supports important critical and theoretical aspects of the new minor as well as advancing the goal, stated in the first sentence of Coastal's Mission Statement, "to develop students who are both knowledgeable in their chosen fields and prepared to be productive, responsible, healthy citizens with a global perspective."

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

The course has already had an important impact in the new Minor in Film Studies and Production. The highly engaged work and appreciative evaluations by students enrolled in the course in Spring 2022 (then offered as LIS 486), attest to its value.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None.
