MATH 242 Modeling for Scientists I (3 credits)(Prereq: A grade of 'C' or better in MATH*160 or MATH*160B)(Coreq: MATH*242L) The class is designed to introduce students to concepts in mathematical modeling and scientific computing. The course is project based, and Computer Software will be used extensively to implement models, solve problems, and visualize results. Topics include counting by enumeration, population dynamics, Newton's method for finding roots of equations, and fractal generation. F,S.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Many students lack prerequisite programming skills required for the course. Additionaly, due to lower enrollments in the course, we will only offer it in the fall semesters rather than both fall and spring.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

Students will enter the course with a better preparedness and higher chances of success. Most of the students who take the course already have a requirement of CSCI 135 in their program so that it will not have a large impact on other programs.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

none

This essentially changes the order in which students may take the classes they are already taking.
