I Spy: Sign employees create new look for campus

Coastal Carolina University staff members Ron Walker and Del Altman have been working together to make the University's sign shop more visible on campus.

Walker, who joined Coastal Carolina University's staff in August 2008, has begun the process of updating the University's signage, replacing the old white boards with teal, black and bronze signs featuring the Chanticleer logo. Walker said the process started with Brooks stadium, but he felt that the remainder of the campus needed to reflect the same look. He approached Anne Monk (former director of marketing) with the idea of branching out from the stadium, and in doing so, found that Coach David Bennett had suggested the same proposal two years prior. With the approval of the Board of Trustees, President David DeCenzo and the Office of Facilities Planning and Management, Walker moved forward with his concepts. The first new sign placed on campus was the 20-mile speed limit sign on University Boulevard. Walker currently designs, creates and builds all the signage on campus.

Walker is originally from Muscle Shoals, Ala., and currently lives in Conway. He is married to Trisha Walker, and is the father of Alexis Walker.

Altman, who joined Coastal Carolina University's staff in 1989, is a trades craftsman and supervisor of carpentry. A few of his duties include engraving name badges, desk plates and awards, and helping with maintenance and renovation on doors, walls and cabinets. He also works closely with Walker, doing most of the construction work for Walker's graphic designs. The two are currently working together on redesigning the set for the "Coastal Today" cable TV show.

Altman is from Conway and is attending CCU. He is married to Twyla and has two daughters, Chelsea and Tamara.
