Update on construction projects

Coastal Carolina University's facilities and maintenance staff has been hard at work during the first month of classes, and they have completed several renovations. Here's an update on ongoing projects:

Brooks Stadium Phase II

Construction of Phase II of the Brooks Stadium expansion project is underway in preparation for the 2018 football season.

In January, demolition of the west side of the stadium was finished, and the groundwork for the expansion began, including the new drainage system, utility lines and the pilings for the upper deck.

The improvements are required as a result of CCU's participation in the Sun Belt Conference. NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision specifications obligate Coastal to add additional seating for Brooks Stadium.

The new seating will expand the capacity from 15,500 seats to nearly 21,000, plus an additional standing room section.
Phase II of the project, which is just a portion of the total $38 million, includes a suite level on the west side of the stadium, new restrooms and concessions for the fans.

Smith Science Building

The 26-year-old Smith Science Building officially reopened Jan. 8 after its renovation that began in June of 2016.
The renovation included heating, ventilation and air conditioning upgrades, as well as roof repairs, electrical upgrades and window replacements. There were also new offices, classrooms and labs added for the Departments of Math, Physics and Psychology.

The project, costing over $7 million, is still under way as the punch list is being completed. The contractor is finishing these specifications on weekends in order to avoid disrupting classes.

Freshëns

Freshëns Fresh Food Studio finished its move into CINO Grille and began service during the first week of classes.

The "fast casual" dining option has a variety of prepared-to-order food with fresh ingredients, blended smoothies and frozen yogurt. Many items are available for a meal swipe, or they can be purchased with dining dollars.

Freshëns is located in the spot Subway occupied in CINO Grille.

Wheelwright restroom renovation

The Wheelwright Auditorium restroom renovation is completed. Construction began in November.

The renovation included the replacement of countertops, lavatories, floor and wall tiles, light fixtures and paint.
In addition to these improvements, new drywall and water closets were included.
