What's up with campus construction?

Here's an update on ongoing projects of Coastal Carolina University's facilities and maintenance department.

• Baxley Hall (Welcome Center)
Renovations are planned for the Welcome Center to create a new entranceway, place the university seal in the hallway into the welcome center, create two additional closets, relocate the circulation desk/counter and add wall space between two existing columns so that a new video board can be installed by a vendor.

ITS will relocate some cables and wires, and new carpet will be installed and the area will be painted. The renovation work will start Sept. 10.

• Sign Shop
ADA signage for suites 101 and 124 was installed on March 12, and faculty/staff names for each room will be added. The philanthropy office is working with a donor for naming rights for the investment lab, which will be reflected in the classroom or on the glass.

About 20 updated speed limit signs will be installed in parking lots around campus over the next couple of weeks.

• Science Complex
The Cooper Courtyard, located in front of the Science II building, will be named and dedicated April 18.

• Brooks Stadium Phase II
Piles are being driven as part of the expansion project, which will include additional seats, restrooms, concessions and suites. The second phase is scheduled to be completed by January 2019.

The two field lights have been moved on the west side, and the contractor should complete the pilings within the next week.

"It will still be about a month before you can really see anything begin to come out of the ground though," says Rein Mongo, director of facilities and maintenance. "There is really a lot of infrastructure that goes into this phase."

• Early Childhood Development and Literacy Center, Kingston Hall
The building area has been blocked off, and demolition has begun inside of the building. Most of the old ceilings have been removed now and some of the walls as well. The asphalt will soon be taken up in the area where the playground will be located.

Construction is scheduled to begin late March, and the substantial completion is set for August 2018.

• Campus moves
The following departments have moved recently:

The math, physics and psychology departments have all moved into the newly renovated Smith Science Center.

Sponsored Programs and Research Services have moved into Suite 160 of the Coastal Science Center.

• University Place
Installation of new flooring in University Place residence hall units continues. The project is completed in UP 120. Work is going on now in UP 190 and should be completed in a couple of weeks. UP 118 is scheduled for May 14 - July 13.

• Wall Building Fountain
The new fountains and university logo in front of the building are complete, but the colors on the fountain will have to be adjusted.
