Chants ranked No. 12 in Collegiate Baseball preseason poll

Coastal Carolina, the defending 2018 Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament champions, were ranked No. 12 overall in Collegiate Baseball’s Fabulous 40 NCAA Division I preseason poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum, the publication announced on Tuesday, Dec. 18.

The Chanticleers, who went 43-19 overall last season, garnered a total of 473 points in the preseason poll, a mere 23 points behind No. 1 LSU who led all teams with 496 points.

Vanderbilt (495), UCLA (494), Texas Tech (491) and Stanford (488) rounded out the top five of the preseason poll.

Coastal, just six points out of the top 10, was the highest ranked Sun Belt member in the poll and just one of two Sun Belt school’s ranked in the top 40 overall, joined by Louisiana at No. 38 overall.

2018 Sun Belt Coach of the Year Gary Gilmore, who is in his 24th season in the Coastal Carolina dugout, has 21 returners from last season's team highlighted by sophomore Parker Chavers, who was named a consensus 2018 freshman all-American, second-team all-Sun Belt Conference, Sun Belt all-tournament and earned a spot on the NCAA Conway Regional all-tournament team.

The Chants had a trio of student-athletes in Cory Wood, Matt Eardensohn and Zach Biermann named to the 2019 Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America teams, powered by Diamond Sports, on Monday, Dec. 17. Wood was named to the second team, while both Eardensohn and Biermann earned spots on the third team.

The Chanticleers open up the 2019 season with the Brittain Resorts Invitational from Feb. 15-17 at Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C. The opening-weekend tournament will consist of host CCU, Maryland, VCU and Campbell.

The 2019 baseball schedule includes three home tournaments, five Sun Belt Conference home weekend series and a total of 29 home games at Springs Brooks Stadium this season.

Season tickets for all home baseball games at Springs Brooks Stadium are on sale now. Season ticket prices start at $250 for the entire home season. Faculty and staff receive a 20 percent discount.
