An inside look at the 2019 CLE

Coastal Carolina University’s Office of University Counsel hosted its second annual Continuing Legal Education (CLE) for local attorneys on Jan. 3, 2019. The “Compliance in the Realm of Higher Education: Athletics, ADA, and Residency” CLE showcased the University’s talented compliance professionals throughout campus, giving a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes work needed to ensure the University is in goodstanding with local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations, as well as university policies and our Code of Ethical Conduct.

The Office of University Counsel developed the idea of hosting the CLE in 2018 and annually thereafter as a way to invite local attorneys onto campus, introducing them to the University’s various professionals who deal with legal issues unique to institutions of higher education. The next CLE will take place in 2020.

Presenters at the 2019 CLE included:

AraLeigh Beam, associate athletic director for compliance
Beam’s presentation focused on how her role as associate athletic director for compliance helps CCU keep student-athletes on the field and in the game. Beam focused on the topics of recruiting, recruiting periods, the eligibility index, scholarships, NCAA rules and regulations such as prohibitions on extra benefits and preferential treatment, and provided a walk-through of the process if there is an alleged violation.

Meredith Canady, deputy compliance/Title IX investigator
Canady provided an overview to CLE participants as to what compliance is, why compliance matters to a public institution of higher education, and what her role as compliance officer looks like at CCU.

Emily Gaspar, director of accessibility and disability services
Gaspar delivered an overview of how CCU is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act in creating and keeping proactive pathways and ensuring a universal design for all to enjoy the programs and facilities that the University has to offer.

Caroline Madden, director of scholarships, compliance and residency
Madden provided information on how residency determinations are made within CCU’s Office of Admissions and Merit Awards. CLE participants learned why residency is determined for tuition and fee purposes, why maintaining a residence in South Carolina and providing domiciliary evidence of such is necessary for a student to keep in-state tuition, and how other factors such as a change in residency, marriage and active duty within the United States Armed Forces may effect a student’s residency determination.

Robert Turnbull, Esq.
Turnbull currently serves the South Carolina Bar as the Lawyers Helping Lawyers co-director, assisting the Lawyers Helping Lawyers Commission in providing confidential service and assistance to impaired lawyers and judges. Turnbull gave insight to CLE participants on the alarmingly high rates of substance use disorders, anxiety and depression within the legal profession across the nation.
