CCU and EHS receive 2018 S.C. Chamber of Commerce Annual Commendation of Excellence Award

Coastal Carolina University and the staff of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) were honored for the University’s successful safety record for 2018 by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce at a luncheon program held in Columbia on March 28.

The event is held annually to recognize those institutions in South Carolina that have attained an exemplary lost-workday case rate for the prior year. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines the lost workday case rate as “the number of lost workdays per 100 full-time employees in any given time frame.”

According to B.J. Landrum, vice president for EHS, “With more than 2500 people working almost 4 million hours for the University last year, our lost-workday calculation averaged less than one day. Environmental Health and Safety interventions fundamentally focus to prevent and eliminate injury and illness to employees, and to assist the University in complying with safety laws. This award is proof that their work has an amazing impact on our employees’ health status and the University’s economic productivity.”

The SC Chamber of Commerce safety certification is evidence of the University’s commitment to protect employees and prevent injuries.

“This award and Coastal Carolina’s excellent lost workday case rate are a direct reflection of the dedication to workplace safety that is shared by Environmental Health and Safety, Public Safety, Facilities, faculty and staff,” states Boyd Holt, EHS director. “We are honored to accept this award on behalf of the entire University community.”
