Dyer receives community award

Coastal Carolina University Executive Vice President Eddie Dyer received the Professional Service Award recently from the Carolina African Heritage Foundation at its annual community awards breakfast.

"This is really an organizational award that I accepted on behalf of the University," says Dyer. "Leadership and positive change come from the top, and President [David] DeCenzo is committed to a vibrant program of diversity. The employees who really have made the difference in our African-American graduation rates are Pat Singleton-Young and Bertha Fladger. They have made the difference, one student at a time, and they give much personal attention to each individual student. That practice is the major reason that we have such a successful graduation rate for our African-American students."

The 2011 Corporate & Community Awards Breakfast recognized several community volunteers. Dyer was praised for his role in "leading the University to being one the most successful American colleges in reducing racial gaps in graduation rates between African-American and white students."
