Looking ahead to an exciting (but challenging) year

By President David A. DeCenzo

First of all, I want to thank each of you for all that you do to support – either directly or indirectly – the educational pursuits of our students and the community that surrounds them. As you have heard many times before, the success of our students is the ultimate aim of all our efforts in the classroom, across campus and throughout the community.

Student tuition and fees now represent more than 85 percent of the University’s revenue, which presents a unique budgetary situation that more closely parallels a private institution than a state-supported university. With a strong team of advocates, I am working continuously to increase our visibility and seek increased support for Coastal Carolina University among elected officials in Columbia and in Washington, D.C., as well as among alumni and friends of the University. There is a high level of interest in our success and an accompanying expectation of transparency. I am proud of the fact that we are among a handful of public agencies that will post all financial transactions of the University accessible on our website well in advance of the July 1 deadline requested by Gov. Nikki Haley. This level of accessibility and accountability is expected and welcome.

While the coming months will prove to challenge us both on and off campus, this is an exciting time to be a part of this University. As the spring semester reaches the midterm, I ask for your patience with the noise and inconvenience created as a result of our physical growth and for your renewed commitment to the success of our students.

Coastal Carolina University Snapshot: 2007-2110 http://www.coastal.edu/about/snapshot.pdf reflects some of the changes we have experienced. The data indicate the growth of the University as well as the changing needs of our students.
