Cheryl Ward is keynoter at French conference

Cheryl Ward, CCU's new maritime archaeologist, was the featured speaker at the International Research Seminar, "Ships and Voyages in the Red Sea during the Pharaonic Age," Dec. 3 to 8 in France. Ward's talk is titled "The project of Min of the Desert: The reconstruction and experimental voyage of a pharaonic ship of the Red Sea." Last year she worked on the reconstruction and sailing of an ancient (3,800 years old) Egyptian seagoing ship. She recently traveled to the Louvre Museum where she attended the premiere of a French documentary film that tells the story of the ship. The PBS science show "NOVA" on the ship reconstruction and journey will air Jan. 12, 2010.

Ward is also traveling to the Egyptian archaeological dig at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis on the coast of the Red Sea. "It is the port of the pharaohs for their voyages to the mystical land of Punt," says Ward, who is the co-principal investigator responsible for all aspects of maritime archaeological materials there. She'll be working there from Dec. 14 to Jan. 12.
