CCU gets 19 permanent recycling receptacles

Nineteen stone recycling containers have been placed around Coastal Carolina University's campus by the Campus and Community Sustainability Initiative.

Jennifer Sellers, sustainability coordinator, said the first permanent receptacles are part of an effort to expand the recycling collection program. They are for the collection of empty plastic bottles, metal cans and glass bottles.

“Our office worked closely with our grounds supervisor in the Department of Facilities to pinpoint high-traffic locations for the placement of these receptacles,” said Sellers. “Each of these receptacles weighs about 600 pounrds. We wouldn’t have been able to place these around campus without generous assistance from Tyrone Smith and his staff and students in the Community Events department. Recycling truly is a team effort.”

The locations for the initial exterior recycling receptacles include: Bill Baxley Hall, Coastal Science Center, Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, Kearns Hall, Kimbel Library, Lib Jackson Student Center, E.E. Prince Building, Edward M. Singleton Administration Building, Cathcart Smith Science Center, E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, Williams Brice P.E. Center, the Santee Cooper solar bus station and a major walkway intersection through campus.

CCU's student Green Team will collect recyclables from the containers regularly, along with the Building and Grounds staff. All recyclables are sorted at the Horry County Solid Waste Authority’s Materials Recycling Facility on S.C. 90 in Conway.
