Hearn is second Meet the Law speaker

Justice Kaye G. Hearn of the South Carolina Supreme Court was the guest lecturer for the Wall College of Business' "Meet the Law" business law lecture series on Oct. 25.

Hearn, who is the second woman ever to serve on the S.C. Supreme Court, spoke to students from the Wall College's business law/legal environment classes about her career as a judge. Following her talk, held in the Wall Auditorium, she took questions from the students.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Hearn was elected family court judge in 1986. She was elected chief justice of the South Carolina Court of Appeals in 1995, the first woman in state history to hold the position. In 2009 she was elected to the S.C. Supreme Court. She has served on many boards and commissions related to the judicial system, and she is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Charleston School of Law.

This was the second event in the Meet the Law series, established in May 2011 to complement the business law courses offered through the Wall College of Business. The series gives students the opportunity to meet and interact with practicing legal professionals who work in the judicial or regulatory system at the national, state or local level.

The program was created by Wall College business law faculty members Henry Lowenstein and Andy Hendrick, who plan to invite one guest lecturer per semester. The lectures are open only to Wall College of Business students.
