Campus construction update for Winter 2011

If you've walked around campus lately, you've noticed the construction going on, buildings going up, parking lots being closed and new ones opened. Here's a rundown on some of the major projects:

The Fred Hicks Dining Hall expansion
Completed at the end of November, this renovation added 6,081 square feet to the existing building, resulting in 175 new indoor seats and 112 more in an outdoor seating and patio area. An international grill, pizza and pasta station, salad bar and two beverage centers were also added.

Central Cooling Plant
The project includes the design of a campus central cooling plant to accommodate planned building growth to serve multiple thermal energy users through an underground network of piping. The initial project phase will be approximately 1,000 tons cooling capacity with a future build-out of 3,000 tons cooling capacity.
Oct. 31, 2011 - Date construction began
Sept. 2012 (estimated) - Substantial completion
Oct. 2012 (estimated) - Final completion

Student Recreation and Convocation Center
A 131,000+ square foot facility that will have a student recreation center, convocation center for assembly, basketball and volleyball games, concerts, etc. There will be coaches offices, locker rooms, concessions, restrooms and equipment storage, scoreboards, PA system and bleachers, climbing wall, .10 mile indoor running track, work out area, etc.
Dec. 11, 2011 - Substantial completion
Feb. 10, 2012 - Contract final completion
April 16, 2012 - Design team/design consultant estimated substantial completion

Greenspace Project
This project consists of the removal of existing trees and debris, grading and leveling of the area, installation of drainage, exterior lighting and irrigation systems and the installation of landscape material and grassing of approximately six acres on the corner of U.S. 501 and University Boulevard.
Sept. 30, 2011 - Date construction began
Dec. 13, 2011 - Substantial completion
Dec. 28, 2011 - Contract completion date 

Kimbel Library / Information Commons Expansion / Renovation
A two-story, approximately 18,500-square-foot new building adjacent and connected to the existing Kimbel Library. Project includes a new shared entrance with the existing building. The new building has a masonry, glass and metal panel exterior.
April 11, 2011 - Date construction began
April 11, 2012 - Substantial completion of project (estimated)
May 11, 2012 - Final completion of project (estimated)

Softball / Baseball Complex Improvements

The softball project includes upgrades to the softball facility such as a new clubhouse/locker room with lockers, showers, storage, coaches locker room, and an area for treatment tables, upgrades to the home dugout and a hitting/pitching tunnel. The baseball project includes demolishing the current stadium and replacing it with new seating (2,500), restrooms, full service concessions, novelty sales area, press box/media work space for radio and television broadcast, premium box/suite area, clubhouse/locker room (includes coaches and umpires).

September 2012 - Construction begins (estimate)
December 2013 - Construction completed (estimated)

Swain Science Building Annex

Construction of a two-story free-standing 40,000-square-foot building on the site adjacent to the current science building. Project includes site work, general construction, fire protection, mechanical, electrical and plumbing.

January 2013 (estimated) - Substantial completion
February 2013 (estimated) - Final completion

Academic Office/Classroom Building
Construction of 48,995 square feet of space consisting of 103 administrative offices, 12 general student classrooms, three lecture tiered student classrooms and a new bagel shop. This project is adjacent to the Wall building.
