MAW program has first graduate

Matthew Fowler is the first student at Coastal Carolina University to complete the Masters of Arts in Writing (MAW) program—a program that began in the Fall 2010 semester. Completing the program in three semesters, Fowler is not only the first graduate of the MAW program, but of a master's program in the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

“I am happy to represent the university and honored to be the first graduate student of Edwards College,” says Fowler. “I feel confident of my future, knowing I have so many great professors and peers as voices to remind me what it is every student strives to do, learn and grow as individuals in order to help others and push humanity forward."

Fowler, a Myrtle Beach native, earned his bachelor’s degree in English in 2007 from CCU. He enrolled in the inaugural semester of the MAW program with a passion for creative writing. While enrolled, he worked as a graduate assistant, managing web content for the Department of English and also reading fiction for “Waccamaw,” CCU’s online literary journal. His essay “Fault Lines” can be seen in Temporary Infinity Press, an online journal, and his self-published debut novel “Ezra Sound: How I Became a Giant” is available in print or as an e-book through Amazon as well as Barnes and Noble.
