CCU mock trial team wins prestigious award

The American Mock Trial Association awarded the Coastal Carolina University mock trial team its Spirit Award at the organization’s regional tournament at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Feb. 3 and 4.

The CCU team competed against 23 colleges and universities including Duke, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and the host of the tournament, UNC-Chapel Hill. This is the second time the team has received the honor during the 2011-2012 academic year. The award recognizes the delegation that best exemplifies the AMTA’s ideal of civility, fair play and justice.

The team has been competing just two years and has only participated in two sanctioned tournaments. CCU sophomore Sarah St. Pierre received the Outstanding Attorney award, while CCU sophomore Andre Williams took the Outstanding Witness award. The two were chosen from a field of more than 120 students in each category who acted as either a witness or an attorney.

The CCU mock trial team includes: Rachel Gainey (team captain), Josh Bloodworth, Ryan Carlson, Danielle McCrackin, Casey McKee, Danny Mitchell, George Paul, Sarah St. Pierre, Tanner Spurgeon, George Taylor, Andre Williams and mock trial coordinator Ronald Wilson.
