Kearns' home featured in magazine
Karen Kearns, teaching associate in the Department of Foreign Languages, was featured in Charleston Magazine in August. She teaches Spanish.The article – and a cover photo – was about Kearns' new home in McClellanville that she had built after her husband's untimely death in 2007.
During construction of the 1,600 square foot home, people would stop by and ask the builders – father-son builders Bill and Nathan Youngman of McClellanville –if they could look at the house.
"I was so grateful to my builders. I went to them with just a lot of ideas in my head, and they turned them into a beautiful house," says Kearns. The next thing she knew, her children were on the cover of a magazine. "It was very flattering, and humbling as well," she says.
Kearns, a CCU graduate (1995, political science), recently moved back to South Carolina with her two small children -- Addy, almost five, and Coeburn, three – to be near family in Myrtle Beach and Conway. She is the sister of Kelli Barker, center manager of the Division of Academic Outreach.
Coastal is a family affair for the sisters as their father, Billy Jack Cornett, graduated from Coastal Carolina when it was a branch of the University of South Carolina. "He was in the military for 30 years and had always wanted a college degree," said Barker, "so he studied at Coastal to earn his degree in interdisciplinary studies.
