Coastal shows it cares

As a part of its Celebrate the Earth events, the CCU Sustainability Initiative held its first annual Campus Care Day on April 18, in partnership with the Eco-Rep Program, the Honors Program, Women's and Gender Studies and the Residence Hall Association.

The daylong event drew more than 100 participants, including students, staff and faculty, who were asked to pick up litter around campus. When they brought back their bags of trash and recycling, they each received an organic cotton T-shirt designed by CCU sophomore Tori Jordan. Other activities included a sustainability showcase on CINO Deck and a Recycling Relay near the Hicks Dining Hall.

"We didn't know what to expect, asking people to pick up trash, but the response was overwhelming," said Jennifer Sellers, sustainability coordinator. "We were so pleased to see everyone pitch in and show pride in their campus by volunteering to clean it up!"

Campus Care Day collected an estimated 287 pounds of trash and recycling.
