CCU hosts first Farmers' Market

The first Farmers Market at Coastal Carolina University was held Wednesday, April 25, in Spadoni Park.

The event was brought to campus by the Sustainability Initiative in partnership with the Waccamaw Market Cooperative. More than eight local farmers set up booths of fresh and local produce, products and plants to offer to the campus community.

The student group, the Eco-Reps of the Sustainability Initiative, set up a sunflower seed planting activity and provided information about going green on campus. The CCU Garden Club had a booth selling crops from its garden. The on-campus staff of Aramark gave cooking demonstrations and free samples including local strawberries and orange blossom honey and homemade potato chips.

Plans are being made for the next Farmers Market for possibly in the fall semester.  Anyone who wants to visit a farmers market in the local area during the summer should visit the website at http://www.waccamawmarkets.org/

If you have ideas or suggestions for the next farmers market, please email sustain@coastal.edu.
