Well-heeled walkers raise consciousness

Walk A Mile In Her Shoes was held in April 12, with about 20 high-heeled walkers and lots of spectators cheering on the participants. The event, part of the annual Sexual Assault Awareness Week, is designed to encourage discussion and promote awareness of sexual violence.

Terri DeCenzo gave opening remarks and the “Ready, Set, Go!” for the walkers to begin their one-mile journey. As a part of the walk, participants stopped at stations where they were asked trivia questions regarding sexual assault statistics, signed pledges against sexual violence and did physical obstacles, which included hula hooping, walking in grass and walking up a ramp and down stairs in their high heels. The purpose of this event is to give men a sense of empathy for the female experience.

T-shirts made by students were displayed with statements against sexual assault and supporting survivors of sexual assault and sexual abuse.

The event was sponsored by the Office of Counseling Services and the Campus Assault Resource and Education Support (C.A.R.E.S.) Coalition.
