Update on campus construction activity or where can I park?

Pardon our progress!

The CCU campus is changing daily with the myriad of construction projects under way. Here's an update:

Opening soon: Bryan Information Commons is a 18,500-square-foot, $6 million addition to Kimbel Library, a student-centered, study/reference/tutorial center. Furniture delivery and installation is scheduled for mid-June. Final completion date is July 1. Wiring for technology will take a few weeks, but the building will be open for the fall semester.

Opening soon: Student Recreation and Convocation Center
The completed building, which will be open in time for the fall semester, is a 127,685-square-foot facility that will have a student recreation center, convocation center for assemblies, basketball and volleyball courts, coaches' offices, locker rooms, concession spaces, climbing wall, indoor running track, workout area and a bookstore.

Opening Spring Semester 2013: The Academic Classroom/Office Building between the Wall College and the Edwards College is a 48,995-square-foot building that will include 103 faculty/staff offices, as well as three large classrooms with tiered seats, plus six 25-seat and six 30-seat classrooms and an Einstein Bagel Coffee Shop. Estimated final estimated completion date is Dec. 2012.

Under construction: The Swain Hall is a 40,000-square-foot building adjacent to the current Smith Science Building. Construction was started Sept. 6, 2011, and estimated final completion is February 2013. The building contains teaching and research laboratories, office and support spaces.

Changing this year: Blanton Circle will be renovated into a green space by removal of traffic and parking, converting the area to a pedestrian corridor and green park in conformance to the campus master plan. Construction is estimated to begin mid-June, and estimated substantial completion is set for September 2012.

Future planned construction: A new 5,600-square-foot Public Safety Facility has been designed and construction is estimated to begin in late July, 2012. The facility will be located next to Student Health Services. Final completion is estimated for Fall 2013.

Future planned construction: Softball/Baseball Complex
The softball project includes upgrades to the home dugout and pitching tunnel, a new clubhouse, a locker room to include showers and storage, and a coaches’ locker room. Seating capacity will be increased from 250 to 800. The baseball project includes replacing existing stadium with new seating, full service concessions, novelty sales area, press box/media work space for radio and television broadcasts, premium box and suite area, clubhouse and locker room. Seating capacity will increase from 800 to 2,500. Estimated substantial completion date is December 2013. Estimated final completion date: January 2014.

Future planned construction: Lib Jackson Student Center Annex I – Construction of an addition to the student center has been approved. The front facade of the current Student Center will be remodeled to showcase the Atheneum, which will function as a rotunda lobby and lounge. Approved budget is $12,050,000. There are two annexes planned for the Student Center. Annex I will include a theater/auditorium, conference rooms, retail services, lounge space, as well as areas for student organizations to assemble. The future Annex II will contain a large event space and conference areas as well as additional lounge space for students.

Future planned construction: A 12-court tennis complex is planned for construction on CCU’s east campus. The complex will come complete with lighting, 12 courts, coaches’ offices, locker rooms, and scoreboards. An estimated completion date of May 2013 has been given.

Future planned construction: The University is in the design phase of new student housing, which will add 1,270 beds for incoming freshmen. It is estimated that the first building (300+ beds) will be available in Fall 2014 with a second building (300+ beds) available by Spring 2015.

Future projects currently under design: a second science annex, a food service/catering kitchen facility, a second addition to Hicks Dining Hall and renovation of the Smith Science Building and Atheneum Hall.

Parking Improvements:

  • New front entrance parking lot to provide 279 additional spaces and right turn access from U.S. 501 is currently under construction. Final completion by Fall semester.
  • New University Boulevard Parking Lot to provide 533 additional spaces, with construction to begin fall, 2012, and estimated substantial completion by February 2013.
  • New S.C. 544 Parking Lot (on Fire Tower property) to provide 600-plus additional spaces, with construction to begin this fall, and estimated substantial completion by January 2013.
