How The HTC Center will impact CCU students

By Jody Davis, director of Campus Recreation

The HTC Center, our new student recreation and convocation facility, begin full operation this fall semester. We are extremely excited about the impact this center will have on the everyday life of the students of Coastal Carolina University. Thanks to a partnership between HTC Inc and CCU that was announced last week, the focus of the center is to serve our students seven days a week and provide programs and facilities that will encourage them to make healthy choices and motivate them to pursue a healthy lifestyle.

The center offers many opportunities for recreation that are new to our campus, such as the 38-foot climbing wall located in the center of the recreation facility. There are also three fitness rooms and an indoor track upstairs. New state-of-the-art workout and cardio equipment, featuring the latest technological advancements, has also been installed.

The Outdoor Center is stocked with camping equipment, kayaks, stand up paddleboards and other gear. In response to popular demand, many more outdoor trips are being offered to students. Our ski trip to Beech Mountain last year sold out completely. Trips will include kayaking on the Waccamaw and in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as day trips, camping trips, stand-up paddle boarding clinics and a trip to the National Whitewater Outdoor Center in Charlotte.

The popular Coastal Cycles program, now entering its second year of operation, will be administered out of the new center with more than 100 bikes in stock. The program allows students to check out a bike for two weeks at a time. If there is no waiting list, students may check the bikes out again for two additional weeks. The program helps alleviate campus parking problems.

Our student employees will constitute a large majority of the work force that operates the new building. Students will be teaching fitness classes, manning the climbing wall, offering personal training sessions, checking out equipment in the outdoor center, and managing the front entrance operations.
