Alumna awarded Congressional medal

Coastal Carolina University alumna Alexandra Tamburro ’12 was recently awarded a Bronze Congressional Award Medal in her hometown of Frankfort, N.Y.

Tamburro was one of 284 members of AmeriCorps’ National Civilian Community Corps who completed 10 months of full-time service to communities in need.

She began her term in Denver, Colo., in October 2010 and graduated in July 2011. Tamburro, with a team of 10 other members, completed a series of six- to eight-week projects in communities nationwide including disaster relief, environment and energy conservation, infrastructure improvement, and urban and rural development.

Established by Congress in 1979, the award is given to Americans aged 14-23 in recognition of their service and initiative. Voluntary public service, personal development, expedition or exploration and physical fitness are some of the criteria for receiving the award. Time commitments determine whether individuals receive a bronze, silver or gold certificate and medal.

Tamburro, 24, earned a bachelor’s degree from CCU in political science this past May.
