Changes on the horizon for Lib Jackson Student Center
Work will soon begin on an addition to the Lib Jackson Student Center that will include a movie theater, convenience store, a multicultural center and a women’s center. Renovations will be made to the existing building, including a new, 5,465-square-foot atrium style lobby and corridor. The existing spiral staircase will be removed to make space for a new office. Changes will also be made to the offices and the corridor on the second floor.
On the west side of the Jackson Student Center, a new building will be erected. The highlight will be a 250-seat movie theater with an adjacent, 1,500-square-foot convenience store. For students, the old recreation room will be remodeled to extend the seating area of the CINO Grill, and a new 3,917-square-foot recreation room will be constructed in its place. Also on the first floor will be a new 967-square-foot multicultural center, a 468-square-foot women’s center and an 1,100-square-foot international center. Multiple study rooms and lounge areas will also be a part of the addition, as well as a 400-square-foot technical support center. Here, students will be able to receive 24-hour service to repair laptops and computers. A system where students will be able to add funds to their CINO cards will also be located in the tech center.
The existing patio area will be relocated to an area between the new addition and the existing student center. This space will be utilized for outdoor events, such as concerts. Upstairs on the west side addition will be a new, 2,962-square-foot student organization office, a 1,500-square-foot career center, a meeting room large enough to seat 100 people and three additional study/meeting rooms, all 400 square feet each.
Plans for the 37,373-square-foot addition to the LIB Jackson Student Center have been sent to the S.C. state engineers for review. Once the plans are approved, contractors will be able to bid on the project beginning in late December or early January. Construction is set to begin in March 2013, with an estimated completion date of May 2014.
