Retired CCU professor appointed to state board

Douglas Nelson, distinguished professor emeritus at Coastal Carolina University, was recently named to the S.C. State Board of Registration for Geologist. His term will end on June 30, 2014.

This board consists of four registered professional geologists from various backgrounds. Candidates for the board must meet specific requirements, including at least five years of geology teaching or research, and a minimum of 12 years in the practice of geology. The governor officially selects the appointee.

Nelson joined the CCU faculty in 1973. He was a professor of geology and marine science for 39 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in geology from the University of South Carolina. Nelson was one of the authors of the bachelor’s degree program in marine science at Coastal Carolina in 1974 and served as dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences from 2003 to 2005. Along with his work as a consultant for Southeastern Environmental Inc., a company located in Conway, Nelson continues to teach two classes a year at CCU since retiring in 2008.

Nelson has published numerous articles and contributed to many professional journals, magazines and textbooks. He has also served with various professional geological organizations, including the Geological Society of America, Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists and the Carolina Geological Survey.
