Hurricane Sandy relief drive raises funds, donated goods

Coastal Carolina University’s Volunteer Services joined with students to lead a relief drive to benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The drive, held on Prince Lawn on Nov. 29, consisted of 15 “CCU Relief Squad” volunteers who raised money and items throughout the day.

Nicole Cozzi, coordinator of Volunteer Services, led the event that raised $361 as well as 801 donated items, including clothes, toothbrushes, razors, toys, winter coats and more. “We received quite a few articles of clothing with tags on them,” says Cozzi. “I was very happy to see that people were giving quality items.” Money and items will be given to the Rockaway Relief Fund and Waves for Water, both charity organizations that provide direct support to the survivors of Hurricane Sandy.

Cozzi met with CCU students Chrissy Damore, Gabby Wirth, Lynn Plam and Marc Fichtner in the beginning of November with only a few weeks to prepare for the drive. “I was very happy to see the students could come together and put on an event on such short notice,” says Cozzi. “For the time we had to prepare, it makes me proud we had such a great turnout.”
