Campus Salvage benefits students and local charities

by Sellers

Ron Walker in the Sign Shop got a two-piece wooden desk with hutch for $30. Bonnie Neal in Athletics bought some Halloween costumes, a beach bag, a rug, plates and cups for $16. Eric Hooks in Public Safety purchased a bicycle for $5.

It was the annual Campus Salvage Sale, Coastal Carolina University's annual yard sale designed to recycle unwanted items that students leave behind at year's end. The sale raised $1,836, which will go into the CCU Student Green Fund.

In addition to raising money for the sustainability program, the May 18 sale also resulted in donations to 14 nonprofits ranging from Katie's Project (prom dresses) to the Community Kitchen and the Horry County Animal Care Center.

Campus Salvage had 14 PODS full of items for sale, and most items priced at $1, with the exception of mini fridges, microwaves, TVs, bicycles and furniture.

“The sale grows in popularity every year," says Jennifer Sellers, CCU sustainability coordinator. "We had more than 200 people waiting in line before we opened at 8 a.m. We get all kinds of shoppers from public school teachers to parents with their kids getting ready for college. I know people look forward to the sale and have even asked about next year’s date.”

Collection for Campus Salvage was from May 6 to 12, when students moved out of the residence halls. PODS were placed in five locations throughout campus to collect donations.

“The collection for Campus Salvage was very intense, and we rely on volunteers to help with these efforts. We also partnered with Public Safety and University Housing to receive abandoned items from students that were donated to the program,” says Sellers.

Campus Salvage not only keeps unwanted items out of the landfill, but it supports the local community with donations.

“This year, we donated more items than ever before to 14 different, local organizations,” says Sellers. “We try to spread the donations and support as many charities as possible.”

Through Campus Salvage, the following items were donated to local charities:

1. Street Reach – four boxes of cleaning products including brooms and mops
