CCU kicks off Shelter Haiti project

The noise of many hammers hammering filled the air on a windy cold afternoon in late February as Coastal Carolina University students, faculty and staff turned out to help build walls for houses that will be shipped to Haiti as part of the Shelter Haiti project

By day's end, 165 frames had been constructed, which will make about 41 homes, organizers say. A WBTW News 13 telethon raised $3,500 from the community, and the TV station donated an additional $500. The Waccamaw Community Foundation, which is handling the funds, reports a total of $8,847 raised so far.

During the day, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., a "Rally for Relief" was organized by students that featured live entertainment, free food and games to raise money.

The goal pf Shelter Haiti is to build 1,001 homes for those displaced by the Feb. 3 earthquake. Construction has now moved to warehouse space at The Sun News on Frontage Road in Myrtle Beach. For more information or to donate, visit shelterhaiti.com.
