Oath Master, Cat in the Hat and friends enjoy CCU's Reading Extravaganza

Coastal Carolina University educators welcomed more than 200 children and their parents for a three-hour Reading Extravaganza during Read Across America events on March 2 in the Spadoni College of Education.

Read Across America is a national event held each spring to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Seuss and to increase children’s motivation to read. Each year at this time, CCU is the local host site for the event, welcoming school-aged children from the surrounding community for an evening of literacy and fun. At the event, there was one-on-one reading, group reading with peers, artistic and creative activities, games and more. A carnival-like spirit, complete with contests, face-painting, costumes and food pervaded the education halls and classrooms.

Held in Kearns Hall, the event was planned and implemented by the local student chapter of the South Carolina Education Association. CCU students worked throughout the previous months to raise funds, plan activities and deliver a fun-filled outreach event to the local community. The student organization collaborated with the Horry County Education Association (a professional development organization within the local public school district).

Visits from the Cat in the Hat and other beloved Dr. Seuss characters made the evening special for the visiting children. The Chanticleer cheerleaders made a special appearance to boost enthusiasm via crowd-raising cheers and chants about the power of reading and learning.
