New dining hall/catering kitchen is under way

The landscape keeps changing at Coastal Carolina University, with a new building seeming to sprout monthly. The next building to be constructed will house CCU Catering Services.

The 8,000-square-foot facility will be located next to Williams Brice Gymnasium on the corner of Chanticleer Drive West and Tom Trout Drive. Inside the building will be seating for 110, and on the outside a small patio capable of seating 24. The kitchen area will be streamlined for cooked and cold food prep areas.

“This will be a fully functional kitchen,” says Jeff Stone, director of food services at CCU. “It’s large enough for catering, our commissary and our grab-n-go, as well as preparing the food for service to our guests in the dining area.”

Stone says the plan is to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner every day in the new building, which is located in an area of campus where there are minimal food offerings. A variety of foods will be available, but Stone says this dining hall will have a specific focus.

“Overall, it will focus on good nutritional food for the student and student-athlete,” he says. “Healthy foods, like brown rice versus white rice, and wheat pasta versus plain pasta. Fresh fruit and vegetables will also be available.”

Construction on the new dining hall began on Oct. 14 and is expected to be completed Nov. 14, 2014.
