CCU initiates new anti-bullying program

Coastal Carolina University recently initiated a new program designed to prevent bullying. The program assembles an interdisciplinary team that researches various ways to address issues related to intimidation and bullying.

“Faculty, staff and students in the CCU community meet to plan workshops intended to minimize bullying, not only at schools, but also in the workplace,” says Robert Jenkot, associate professor of psychology/sociology and coordinator of the program.

Members of the team have expertise in a range of fields, including education, elementary school bullying, criminology, juvenile delinquency, primary school administration and human resources. “The group expects that many faculty members will be able to connect their own research to that of the group,” says Jenkot.

The team promotes interdisciplinary cooperation among faculty, staff and students. “We are also interested in involving students in the research and any future efforts geared toward anti-bullying,” says Jenkot. “Several of the projects we have planned strongly encourage student participation.”

There are also intentions to integrate team member’s expertise into grant proposals for issues related to bullying. “Any member of the CCU community, be it faculty, staff or student, is invited to contact me about coming to a meeting or getting on the email list,” says Jenkot.
