New improvements and additions coming to CCU

Driving and walking around campus, you’re likely to see lots of construction activity as new buildings and improvements are being made. Here are some updates.

Atheneum Hall Renovation
The renovations will include offices and meeting space for alumni staff, a large meeting room and pre-function area along with a dining room/board meeting room. Construction is estimated for completion by Feb. 7, 2015.

Food Service Catering Building
An 8,000 square-foot facility is being built next to Williams Brice Gym at the corner of Chanticleer Drive West and Tom Trout Drive. The Food Service Catering Building will be the staging area for all catered events on campus along with a seating area for approximately 100 people inside and an outside patio area that can seat 24. Construction is projected to be finished by Nov. 20.

Campus Emergency Notification System
The notification system will allow Public Safety to transmit emergency messages via, live audio or a pre-recorded message. The system will have speaker units at four locations on campus. Construction is estimated for completion by Aug. 15.

Softball/Baseball Complex Improvements
The softball project includes upgrades to the softball facility that include a new clubhouse/locker room with lockers, showers, storage, a coach’s locker room, an area for treatment tables, upgrades to the home dugout and a hitting/pitching tunnel.

The baseball project includes construction of a new stadium that seats 2,500. There will be new restrooms, full service concessions, novelty sales area, press box/media workspace for radio and television broadcast, premium box/suite area and clubhouse/locker room.

Estimated substantial completion date for softball is May 7, and the estimated substantial completion date for the baseball improvements is July 30.

Tennis Complex Construction
Construction began March 18 for a 12-court tennis complex with lighting. The clubhouse will include coaching offices, locker rooms, restrooms, equipment storage and fencing. Final completion is estimated for Oct. 17.

New Recreation and Athletic Fields
Additional recreational and athletic field space will be added adjacent to the tennis complex in the Atlantic Center Industrial Park. The fields are estimated to be completed this upcoming fall.

Academic Office/Classroom Building #2
This project will include the design of a 52,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the Wall Building. The new facility will provide approximately 100 faculty and administration staff offices, ITS office and space, and 15 to 18 classrooms ranging from 25 to 40 seats in size. Architectural selection is taking place at present.

Lib Jackson Student Center Annex I
This project includes the design and programming of the first of two annexes planned for the Lib Jackson Student Center. The first Annex, estimated at 41,000 square feet, will include a movie theatre, a new game room, a C-Store and office and meeting spaces for student groups. The $12 million project is estimated for completion by Dec. 3.

New Student Housing Construction (Elvington Property)
The project includes the design of 1,270-bed student housing for first-year students in a multiphase project on the campus. The residence halls will be traditional yet modern and should have double-loaded corridors with junior suites/semi-suites, providing double-occupancy bedrooms and a minimum of one bathroom with a separate vanity and lockable water closet per semi-suite. Community spaces should be on each floor with a ratio of two large community spaces – one quiet student room and one living room space – per 35 residences. Residence halls will include full wireless and wired internet connectivity, access control and security systems including mechanical and electrical locks, security camera and fire safety equipment, high efficiency laundry machines, custodial and maintenance storage and working space, apartments for professional live-in staff as well as professional offices, reception and meeting space. Classroom and/or meeting spaces as well as recreational space/facilities should be included in the complex. The first two buildings (of 4 planned for the project) will be student ready in August, 2015, and the second two buildings will be student ready in August, 2016.

Fire Tower Parking Lot
This project includes the design and construction of approximately 700 parking spaces including a bus loading/unloading area and bus shelters at the Fire Tower site located off S.C. 544 South of the campus. The parking lot is estimated to be completed July 8. 

University Place – 945
CCU will renovate existing food service areas to provide a complete new kitchen and new service area with hot and cold food for UP residence. The final completion date is still to be determined.

Chick-Fil-A
CCU will construct a new Chick-Fil-A in the Cino Grille in the Student Center; it is estimated to be completed in mid-September.

Science Annex II
Construction of a 71,150 square-foot science building adjacent to the Smith and Swain Science buildings is scheduled to begin July 21. It will include 40 faculty offices, eight teaching labs, four 60-seat classrooms, two 45-seat classrooms, one ecology teaching lab and six small labs for ecology research.

Final completion of the Science Annex II is scheduled for March 21, 2016.

Other improvements and projects in the works for CCU are building a fountain at the entrance of Brooks Stadium, new football field turf at Brooks Stadium, central cooling plant expansion and the Smith Science building renovation.
