CCU wants students, faculty and staff to LiveWell

by Pioli

LiveWell@CCU is a campuswide initiative that promotes the overall well-being of students, faculty and staff. The LiveWell website, coastal.edu/livewell, acts as a portal to connect Coastal Carolina University community members with helpful resources for becoming healthier and more engaged in personal wellness.

The mission of LiveWell is to promote a healthy environment where community members are given opportunities to develop their own personal wellness through departmental collaboration, health education, policy implementation, and research and assessment.

Resources on the website cover many dimensions of wellness, including tips for increasing physical activity, avoiding alcohol and drugs, maintaining a healthy diet, monitoring your emotional wellness, taking care of your physical health, staying safe, sustaining your environment and quitting smoking. Links to the different departments will not only provide viewers with information specific to services at CCU, but also to resources that provide medically accurate information – all in an easy-to-read format.

On Aug. 1, Coastal Carolina joined the elite list of 1,343 campuses in the U.S. that are 100 percent smoke free. One of LiveWell’s primary purposes is to promote the new tobacco-free policy and to provide a central location where individuals can discover the various support programs available to assist students, faculty and staff who wish to quit smoking. Under the Tobacco-Free section on the LiveWell website, you can access the Tobacco-Free policy and find helpful resources, along with FAQs and tips about stopping tobacco use, as well as a link to register for iQuit.

CCU’s iQuit directs students, faculty and staff to resources that will help them quit smoking, including classes instructed by trained facilitators in the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking program.

Derek Johnson, an alumnus of CCU’s health promotion program, is employed with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety at Coastal and facilitates the iQuit program for faculty and staff.

“I feel that I am practicing what I have been trained to do,” Johnson says. “Our program is going to be a benchmark for the surrounding community to embrace, and I’m excited to be a part of that. We are leading by example.”

Students may contact Student Health Services to be connected with counselors for behavior modification, for Nicotine Replacement Therapy and even for hypnosis.

Another opportunity for life and health improvement for faculty and staff will be the Weight Watchers at Work program. The series consists of 10 weekly meetings to be held on Thursdays at noon and conducted by a Weight Watchers leader. Meetings will consist of discussions about healthy weight loss, good nutrition and behavior modification. More information regarding this program can be found on the LiveWell website or email livewell@coastal.edu.

LiveWell is the center for wellness-related events and educational tips at CCU. There are many ongoing programs designed to improve the lives of community members. It is our hope that through this website and this initiative, we can create a greater awareness about health and wellness, and that increased participation in these events will benefit the entire CCU community. The LiveWell website will be updated throughout the year with topics of benefit to students, faculty and staff. For more information or to make suggestions on areas to be covered, please email livewell@coastal.edu.
