SC historical marker unveiled on campus

An official South Carolina Historical Marker for Coastal Carolina University was unveiled Friday, March 26, in a ceremony on the horseshoe. The marker commemorates the founding of the institution in 1954 and the establishment of the present campus in 1963. A gathering of faculty, staff, students and friends of the University attended the event, which was also an occasion to honor Edward M. "Dick" Singleton. The first chancellor of the institution at its present location, Singleton led Coastal from 1963 to 1983, the longest tenure of any chief executive to date. The university's first building at the present campus was named the Edward M. Singleton Building in honor of his leadership.

Speakers at the event included President David A. DeCenzo; Ben Burroughs, president of the Horry County Historical Society; Billy Alford, chairman of the CCU Board of Trustees; and Eddie Dyer, CCU executive vice president. Many members of Singleton's family were present.

"Oh behalf of my father, we would like to convey sincerest appreciation and gratitude to Dr. DeCenzo and staff for securing the historical landmark status," said Kim Singleton, son of Dick Singleton. "He would also like to acknowledge Coach (Gary) Gilmore and his players for a stellar performance on Dick Singleton Day. He thoroughly enjoyed the festivities and is proud of the University, its leadership, direction, growth and continual progress."

The South Carolina Historical Marker program was established in 1936 and more than 1,000 markers have been erected since that time.

A South Carolina Historical Marker commemorating the site of the original Conway High School building, including Coastal Carolina Junior College's presence there from 1954 to 1968, will be unveiled Monday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m. at Conway Middle School.
