CCU art professor’s work displayed locally

Coastal Carolina University art professor Maura Kenny will be the first exhibitor to display her work at the new ARTSPACE 506 through Nov. 16. The venue provides opportunities for established and emerging artists to display their work in the community.

Kenny will feature her artwork “Paintings.” On the first floor, she will display her mixed media works that deal with memory, identity, birth, death and social injustice. The paintings are layered, textured and embroidered with gems and threads.

On the second floor, Kenny will feature her small drawings and a selection of paintings from her project on subjects at Hobcaw Barony in Georgetown, S.C. Hobcaw Barony is a wildlife refuge and living laboratory for the University of South Carolina and Clemson University.

Kenny is originally from Connecticut but has lived in Pawleys Island for many years. She has been teaching at CCU for 25 years and was trained in traditional painting methods. She teaches painting and drawing, and her paintings have been included in national and international art collections. She earned her degree in art education from Southern Connecticut State University. She earned her M.F.A degree in painting and drawing from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

The next show called “Small Works Show,” will begin Nov. 20 with an opening receptionat 5 p.m. The show is reserved for emerging artists in the coastal area. Future shows for the new year include other CCU artists iincluding Paul Olsen, Treelee MacAnn and Elizabeth Keller.
