Jackson Student Union opens Jan. 12

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for – Coastal Carolina University’s new Jackson Student Union opens on Monday, Jan. 12, with a formal dedication planned for Friday, Feb. 27.

The 36,000-square-foot building has been under construction for more than two years, with students mourning the loss of the student center deck and everyone inconvenienced by the difficulty of getting to the CINO Grille – and Wheelwright Auditorium and Starbucks. But this magnificent new student gathering spot will make the wait well worth it.

A “Main Street” thoroughfare along the front of the new building has lots of windows, making it a well-lit thoroughfare that will sport vertical teal banners and seating areas along the way. (We viewed it in November when you had to use a lot of imagination to visualize the end result.) The area runs the entire length of the front of the building and will ultimately extend to Phase II, which will include more meetings rooms and a large ballroom.

Need milk? Bread? No worries. There’s a convenience store that will cater to the needs of campus constituents and even offer free popcorn on movie nights. Did you catch that? There’s a 211-seat movie theatre with stadium seating, just like the real deal. The plan is to run recently released films that are no longer in theatres but are not yet in DVD release. For $2, you get a movie and free popcorn. Who can beat it? Some of the upcoming titles are: “The Equalizer,” “No Good Deed” and “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.” The seats even have built-in cupholders.
