Edible Book Fair winners announced

Caleb Jones, a freshman majoring in biology, is the student winner of Kimbel Library’s Edible Book Fair with his “Ant Mound” cake based on the children’s book “On Beyond Bugs” from the Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library. The chocolate cake was in the shape of a large ant hill and had raisins for ants marching up the hill, sprinkled with Oreo crumbs for dirt.

Second place student winner was Christina Dunbar for her “Island” cake based on “The Cay” by Theodore Taylor, and third place went to Ashlyn Barton for “Steel Magnolias,” cupcakes decorated with marshmallow petals that looked like magnolia blossoms.

Rose Graf, access services specialist in the library, won first place in the faculty/staff division for “Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder” based on the mystery book by Joanne Fluke, featuring chocolate chip cookies and a chocolate ax adorning them. Julie Townsend won second place for “How to Eat Fried Worms,” based on the book by Thomas Rockwell.

First place in the community division was Kristi Rimer for her “Giving Tree” cake that recreated the Shel Silverstein book cover with a fondant scene. Terri Carter won second place for her cherry pie bites inspired by “Beyond the Cherry Tree: the Leadership Wisdom of George Washington” by James Hodges. “This is the reason Washington cut down the cherry tree -- [for] cherry pie bites!”

First prize in the student category was an Apple TV. Prizes in the faculty/staff and community categories included a Kimbel Library prize pack.

The Edible Book Fair is held annually during the National Library Week.
