Living out Feel the Teal

Feel the Teal is about creating and sustaining a stronger sense of institutional community and culture among Coastal Carolina University’s faculty, staff, students, alumni and all its lstakeholders. This is accomplished through providing the infrastructure and service training needed to ensure a productive, supportive and educational work environment. The University should treat students and one another in a manner that demonstrates their value and importance, and students should receive quality education inside and outside the classroom to prepare them for their future as productive, responsible and well-rounded citizens.

Each semester I have the opportunity to personally thank some of our employees who live out Feel the Teal by going above and beyond in the area of service excellence. The people who receive recognition are nominated by other faculty, staff and students during Attitude of Service, the second training module for Feel the Teal Service Excellence. It is an honor to recognize these faculty and staff who continue to help grow Coastal Carolina’s tradition, integrity and excellence. Here are the three people who were recognized this semester:

Carol Grant, office support for the Wall Center for Excellence.
Grant was nominated because she is an extremely hard working and dependable employee. She has taken on a significant increase in her workload over the past few years due to the expansion of the Professional Development Activities program, changes in the advising process and growth in the student population. She has been responsible for creating more events, inputting more attendance records and surveys, booking more rooms and media requests, and troubleshooting more logistics issues. She has never complained about her increased workload and welcomes every situation with a positive attitude.

Meghan Carnes, lecturer of mathematics and statistics in the Wall College of Business.
Carnes has done tremendous work within the department, especially with the Professional Golf Management students. For example, a student was struggling with Math 132 and was concerned that he/she would fail. The student went to Carnes and asked for her help. She met with the student daily for the last month of class, giving selflessly of her time. With her help, the student did pass the course and actually made a “B” in the class. Carnes was definitely “Feeling the Teal.”

Becky Bogart, facilities operation superintendent for University Housing.
Bogart was nominated for the passion and pride she feels for CCU. Since noticing that students were littering, she has taken on the challenge of a beautification process at University Place. She felt the students lacked school pride in their disregard of how littering affects the whole community, so she took the initiative and asked for advice on how to boost the spirit in University Place. Since then, she is now working with the students in the Residence Hall Association, Community Councils and the University Housing staff to start a “pick it up” campaign. The slogan is “CCU Pride Starts from the Ground UP!” Bogart came up with this idea as another way we can all Feel the Teal.

As you can tell, these faculty and staff members want the best for the Coastal Carolina University community. They continue to go beyond expectations to please students and visitors on our campus, and they do it because they love to showcase what CCU has to offer. Thank you so much -- not only these three outstanding employees -- keep Feeling the Teal, but all of you who help share our great University with others in ways that encourages our school spirit and pride.

Sincerely,

David A. DeCenzo, Ph.D.
President
