How CCU's social media has grown

One month ago today marked my first full year working at Coastal Carolina University. Over the past few weeks, I reflected on those first 12 months to evaluate what I had learned. After some thought, it became apparent to me that five specific themes especially stood out regarding social media at Coastal Carolina. I want to briefly share these items.

1. Social Media Gold = Building Projects and Athletics -- After sharing and developing thousands of pieces of content over the past year, I have learned which subjects will consistently perform at a high level. Without a doubt, posts dealing with either new buildings on campus or the success of our sports teams will garner the most likes, shares, favorites and retweets. Our community simply loves to see our campus grow as much as it enjoys rallying around our student-athletes. If a post is immediately needed that will induce high engagement, we are going in one of two directions.

2. Our Audience is Eager to Participate in #CCUSocialMedia -- Not only does CCU have an audience that will interact and engage with our social media efforts, but they will physically participate as well. Whenever a social media campaign was introduced that required people to actually go out and do something, our spots filled up within hours. Whether it was our #CCUSA campaign, our current A Teal Shaded Summer program, or a host of other initiatives, our audience stepped up and enthusiastically participated every single time.

3. Our Students are Eager to Work for #CCUSocialMedia -- I can’t count the number of students who have asked me how they can become involved with our social program. With careers in social media exploding in today’s job landscape, our college students want to make themselves competitive for these multiplying positions. I sincerely wish I could accommodate every student looking for experience.

4. We Offer Fun For all Ages -- A long time ago they said social media was a young person’s world. Not so much anymore. From analytics and by observing the activity of our channels, it is clear that people of all ages are enjoying our social media sites. For as many current and prospective students interacting with us socially, we have just as many alumni and faculty/staff doing the same.

5. Plenty of Room to Grow -- Although #CCUSocialMedia has made great strides, the sky is the limit. Our program has many opportunities to improve and expand. We want to make the social media experience better for our audience, and steps will be taken in the next year to do just that.

Thank you for following our social media channels. Faculty and staff account for a powerful portion of our audience, and I truly value your participation and feedback. Keep an eye out for big things to come.
