Win a necklace, help build a Haiti shelter home

A seed bead necklace, created by Coastal Carolina University’s Advanced Production of Crafts class, will be raffled Wednesday, May 5 to raise money for Shelter Haiti. Twelve students spent more than 130 hours on the production of the necklace.

The class, under the direction of assistant professor Penelope Miller, plans to enter the necklace in a drawing to raise money to buy at least one shelter for Haiti.

CCU recently joined the communitywide initiative to build and ship 1,001 modular homes to aid the people of Haiti. The local effort is being led by Ed Jackson, a Myrtle Beach real estate developer. The class wanted to get involved and joined Jackson in his effort. A shelter can be built for around $500.

“We were looking for a way to get involved with the Haiti relief effort,” said Michael O’Conner, a senior health promotion major in the class. “We wanted to give to Shelter Haiti, but specifically help in Horry County’s effort. We knew by helping Ed, the money would go directly to the cause.”

Tickets are available for $5 in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, Room 127 (Visual Arts Office). The necklace can be viewed through Miller’s office window in Edwards Room 133.

The drawing will be held at noon in Edwards, Room 124. The students will also display their semester artwork at the drawing, and some students plan to put their artwork on sale.
