Chauncey bronze statue moves to new home

Coastal Carolina University’s new bronze statue of its mascot Chauncey has been installed in its permanent home at the TD Sports Complex entrance on Chanticleer Drive West. It was intended for the statue to be unveiled the Friday of Homecoming weekend, but the weather interfered with those plans. Instead, he was moved with cranes and quietly unveiled for all to see and enjoy.

The seven-foot Chauncey was designed and sculpted by Logan Woodle, sculptor and assistant professor of visual arts at CCU, with help from his sculpting class last semester.

About a year ago, he started with a 17-inch maquette (small preliminary model) clay Chauncey in a boxer’s pose with a fierce look and raised fists.

From that maquette, Woodle constructed the large Chauncey in the identical pose, modeling and carving him from 350 to 400 pounds of oil-based clay. “We wanted him to be super-heroesque in the tradition of Batman or Captain America, but with a more universal pose,” says Woodle.
