Two at CCU named 2010 Sustainability Fellows

CCU staffer Marissa Mitzner and student David Shirk are among 10 Sustainability Fellows in the nation chosen to work with local businesses and nonprofits to improve their economic, environmental and social performance.

The Sustainability Fellows program, part of the Institute for Sustainable Development, is comprised of graduate students and professionals from six universities in four different states, assisting in the Institute’s 17 Green Plus partner communities.

Mitzner, a 2008 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, is the first sustainability coordinator at CCU. For the past two years she has been helping the University to become climate neutral.

Mitzner won a statewide award from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control for the 2009 Recycling Event of the Year for her Campus Salvage move-out program. Mitzner also serves on the Bike, Hike and Paddle Committee for the City of Conway, and she is an executive member of the Winyah Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Shirk, a marketing major at CCU, has held leadership roles in the Eco-Representatives program, Rotary International, Outdoor Adventure Club and Beta Gamma Sigma. He was nominated for Marketing Student of the Year and is looking forward to working with Green Plus to help businesses in the area become more sustainable.

Mitzner and Shirk will attend a week of orientation and training in the North Carolina Research Triangle during early June, after which they will work with the Institute’s chamber partners in several states conducting individual and group research projects to advance the principles and practice of sustainability.
